How to Manually Open and Close Your Electric Garage Door

Close the Door Manually from the Inside of Your Home

In some cases, the issue with your garage door may not be as a result of being locked out it may happen even when you and your car are still inside. You need to know that most electric garage doors will come with a bypass switch which allows you to override the garage door system and lift the door open manually. 

To discover the bypass switch simply locate the red rope that hangs in the garage mechanism, it serves as a release cord that works as an emergency release when your door doesn’t open. Make sure the garage door is fully closed before releasing the rope and once you release, the garage door will slide on the trolley. It is important that the door is fully closed before releasing the bypass switch to prevent damage to the door spring.

Reset the Garage Door Opener

Once you have opened your garage door manually, it will remain manually-engaged unless you reset the door opener. It is important that you get the underlying problem fixed before re-engaging the door opener. Contact a certified garage door technician to conduct an inspection and fix the underlying garage door problem before you re-engage the door opener to its automatic or electric mode. 

The garage door opener can be reset in easy steps. Start by raising it fully overhead, then pull it straight down on the emergency red release cord in order to connect the trolley to the carriage. Once the trolley is connected to the carriage, you will hear a loud click, then push the control button located on the wall or remote control to open the door. Just in case your garage door was shut off because of a power outage, it may not work instantly after re-setting.
