The reason for this is that Torsion hardware supports the weight of the door which is centrally distributed. It also provides better operation when compared to extension hardware. The extension hardware comes with two coil springs located over the tracks and they work independently of each other. Extension hardware is not as durable as Torsion hardware. 

Is there a Minimum Space Needed Above the Door?

A minimum of 14 inches of space is recommended as headed space above the garage door. An extra 2” space is recommended for the door opener. 

How Much Does a Garage Door Cost?
